FREE SOUNDWARE: Project Zompler. Juno Polysynth for Zampler.

'Juno Polysynth' for Zampler.

Here's the latest sound set for Zampler
Project Zompler is my ongoing soundware project for Zampler
Zampler is a freeware VST sample player with synthesizer parameters and effects. You can download your free copy here:

Project Zompler.

Project Zompler will provide a full set of 'essential' sounds/patches for Zampler ideal for use with freeware or entry level music production platforms (or DAWs) that don't come with much in the way of instruments and sounds, such as Soundbridge or Reaper. Turning Zampler into what is commonly referred to as a Rompler. Great for learning/education, but the sounds are really usable and ideal for songwriters and music composers that need a strong 'foundation' of 'everyday' sounds.

All the sounds are stored in Zampler's own .fxb file format along with the source samples, so they are ready to use patches and don't require any further mapping or editing.

I reckon I'm now up to 99 patches in the collection, you can find the others, which include piano/e-piano, acoustic guitars, electric basses, strings, voices/choirs, trumpet, sax, and organs by searching 'Zompler' in the search bar. Once I get to the magic 128 I'll collate all the sets into a single blog post page and download file for anyone who would like the whole library in one go.

Juno Polysynth Sounds for Zampler.

This patch collection is a selection of 20 polysynth sounds. Based around a sawtooth wave sample, this collection features some really powerful 'comps' as they are sometimes known alongside some slower moving pad type sounds.

Zampler's powerful filtering, modulation, envelope generators and effects have been used to supply a great selection of fat, powerful sounds evoking the 'analog' synth age of the 70s and 80s.

It actually kind of turns Zampler into a synthesizer in it's own right.

Use the following link to downlod the patches along with the source samples. Just right click to download the whole folder to your hard drive then use Zampler's 'Load Patch' function to navigate to and load the required patch/sound.

FREE SOUNDWARE: Ghost Machine. Yamaha RX-5. Samples/Resamples, and RitMix Kits

Yamaha RX5 Sample Library.

This month's Ghost Machine vintage drum machine sample/kit collection is the mighty Yamaha RX5

Yamaha's RX5 was the ultimate incarnation of the RX Series drum machine, boasting touch sensitive pads, 12 separate outputs with their own individual faders and basic sound editing controls including pitch and envelope adjustment....... and 24 (yes 24!) digitally sampled sounds.

I remember when I started in music retail in the mid/late eighties, this was a very sought after product with a ticket price around £900 I believe, although moving on to London's Denmark Street a little later, I became interested in more 'exotic' American products such as EMUs SP1200 and Sequential's Studio 440

But the RX5 did have it's admirers and users including New Order, Cocteau Twins, Madonna, Cameo, and interestingly The Sisters of Mercy. I was always led to believe that the Sister's 'Dr Avalanche' was an old Boss DR-55 Doctor Rhythm drum machine. However 'Dr Avalanche' had a number of incarnations and at one point was an RX5. I guess, rather like Dr Who, he/she regenerated into different machine forms.

More info on the Sisters of Mercy and their drum machines here.

You can certainly hear how the RX5 would have suited the Sister's sound with it's big rattly snare drum and fat/thuddy kick.

So here we have not only the original set of sounds from the RX5 but a set of resamples, with some of the sounds EQ'd, squashed, crushed and shaped to be even bigger, fatter and even more 80s!

Ritmix Kits.

in addition to the set of samples, I've also put together some kits for Soundbridge's Ritmix drum machine instrument. Ritmix is an incredible freeware VST drum machine. All my drum machine sets that have kits are now put together for Ritmix so anyone can access them free of charge including the mighty, and soon to be legendary, 80s Goth Kit.

To download your free copy of Ritmix just head over to soundbridge.io and you'll find it there.

Demo Video.

I've put together a quick demo video for this soundware set with a demo track and some RX5 history, famous users and some personal ramblings.

You can get your free RX5 samples/resamples and Ritmix kits via the link below. Just right click to download the entire folder. You can then use the individual samples with your own sample player of choice or via Ritmix.

FREEWARE REVIEW: Soundbridge RitMix. Freeware Drum's Best Kept Secret.

Fully featured drum machine instrument with 16 pads, step sequencing, comprehensive sound editing, and factory sound and pattern library.

Seems almost too good to be true, but it isn't. Developed by the Soundbridge people, but it's a VST plug-in, so you don't need to be using Soundbridge to use it. It's available to download completely separately from their website at soundbridge.io

Like Soundbridge, it's attractively and professionally presented and arranged in the same style as Soundbridge.

Any third party .wav drum samples can be loaded into any of the 16 pads so you don't need to stick to the factory sounds although 200+ are provided.

In fact, all my electronic drum sample collections now come with kits developed exclusively for RitMix, so for this reason alone, you should get yourself a copy!

Lets take a quick look.......

Ritmix Step Sequencer.

Ritmix has a drum machine style step sequencer page that allows sequencing of the 16 pad sounds. Sequence length can be defined and four pattern slots are available which can be run consecutively or selected when required. Your DAW's automation recording facilities should allow you to record pattern selections as your song runs.

Some basic sound editing features are available via this page including pitch and filter editing for each sample, velocity and panning, distortion fx, and random patterns can be generated. In fact, randomisation is available for most of the parameters here.

Ritmix Sound Editing.

Ritmix's sample editing is as comprehensive as you like with envelope generators for amp, pitch and filter, four band parametric EQ can be applied, normalisation is available to optimise each samples level and loop playback is available.

A visual stereo representation of the selected sample is shown.

Ritmix Effects.

Reverb, delay and compression processing/effects are available and each of the 16 samples has a send level to each. Delay can be synced to your DAWs master tempo.

Each of the effects has comprehensive parameter editing for fine tuning.

Ritmix Mixer Page.

Ritmix has a mixer page which brings all the mix parameters into a single window so you can edit the sounds for patterns as they run without having to skip around different windows. Solo and mute are available for each of the 16 samples, pan, reverb and delay send, as well as gain/level for each sample can all be adjusted from this single window.

Conclusion.

I don't know of a freeware drum machine instrument that really comes close to Ritmix. In fact, it's difficult to think of any features it's missing. As a reason user, I regularly use ReDrum and there's really nothing missing. In fact, Ritmix has more pads, on board effects, and far more comprehensive sample editing. Some may find the single set of outputs a bit limiting, but the on board effects (including compression) and mixing go some way to overcoming this limitation.

It's really professionally presented with lots of colour to make navigation quick and easy and the logical editing windows allow adjustments to be made whilst patterns are running without jumping around different windows.

I'd go and download yourself a free copy before they change their minds!
