PRODUCTION CLUB SOUNDWARE. First Drop of STM Production Club Members Happens On January 1st. Plus More FREE soundware.

Production Club Inaugural Soundware Drop. New Year's Day. January 1st. 2022

STM is growing fast, and the big news this month is the launch of Production Club. Get your hands on great sounding, professional soundware products delivered direct to your email inbox every month as well as our monthly computer music newsletter.

You can earn Production Club membership by buying your musical instrument products at Thomann using our special web code, you can buy membership from just £5.99 a month, or you can buy the individual soundware products through our e-junkie channel.

And not just loops and beats! We've got ready-to-use samples instruments that can be played via any platform, new patches for the latest free software synths, drum samples and ready-to-play kits, and yes, loops and beats as well.

We've also got special introductory soundware packs for specific products so you can enjoy your new product purchase with a ton of free additional sounds.

You can find out more about Production club via the link below.

So here's a run down of what's coming in the first 'drop' giving you some idea of what we'll be getting up to every month.

Soundware for Software Users.

We've got two major instrument sample based soundware products this month. The first is Session Strings. Great for those wintery soundscapes this edgy, slightly melancholic collection of string ensembles are expertly sampled in detail and carefully looped to deliver authentic, usable string ensembles great for pop, rock, edm, or contemporary classical genres.

The package comes in four versions. A .sf2 soundfonts for use in any soundfont compatible player/instrument. There are also 'ready to play' patches for the amazing Zampler free VST plugin, for Reason Studios NN-XT sampling instrument, and for Bitwig's Sample instrument.

One of the patch collections, Winter Strings (8 sounds) is available free for anyone to download from the following page.

As this is also our inaugural monthly soundware package, we thought we'd get really 'essential' and develop the Ultimate Soundfont Piano. We don't think there's a great acoustic/grand piano soundfont out there at the  moment so we've developed our own. Again, sampled in detail, using only natural decay and no loops. Four velocity layers means it's sounds really authentic and natural and, like any real piano, it;s great for all music genres. Like Session Strings, it's available as a ready to use .sf2 soundfont, or as a number of Zampler, Reason NN-XT or Bitwig Sampler patches all with edited effects, ambience and filtering to produce a number of alternative sounds. A number of instruments will load and play .sf2 soundfonts and Zampler is a free VST plug-in, so anyone can access and use the library.

Drum Soundware.

For any owners of software or hardware instruments that can load .wav files we've got a couple of drum sample collections this month.

You'll get E-Drum Mechanics Vol 6 with January's soundware pack. 300+ new drum samples/resamples. Contemporary electronic drum samples that don't fit in the 'classic' category. Plus great sounding 'beefed up', squashed, crushed, re-shaped, re-pitched, monster sounding resamples.

Our Drum Mechanics products are also supplied with a number of ready to use kits for Soundbridge's amazing RitMix free VST drum machine instrument so, again, users of any VST compatible music production platform can access them. Lots of hardware products can load drum samples via their SD card slots now so these are also great for Akai MPC, Korg Kronos/Kross 2, Roland Fantom/FA Series keyboards, and SP Series sample players along with many others.

E-Drum Mechanics 6 Lite is a freeware sample collection for anyone to download. 64 samples, 16 re-samples and 2 kits.

Every month we also re-create a drum machine from the past with a bunch of samples/resamples and kits.

This month, we'll actually do two! The Alesis HR16 and HR16B. All the samples plus a selection of 'beefed up', EQ'd, re-shaped, re-pitched, squashed and crushed resamples. For use with any drum/sample instrument, plus kits for Soundbridge's amazing free Ritmix drum machine instrument.

We create most of our drum machine soundware products and kits for Ritmix so why not download your free copy now from the link below.

Synthesizer Patches.

Every month we develop synthesizer patches for a range of software VST synths. We develop for a range of top notch freeware products so that everyone has access to them. This month we've got 64 great sounding patches for Full Bucket Music's FB7999 Korg DW software synth emulation.

FB7999 was a revelation when we first heard it. It's accessible, easy to program, and has potential way beyond it's 'factory presets'.

You can download your free copy of FB7999 from the Full Bucket website link below, and you'll get your free additional patches delivered to you with January's Production Club delivery on New Year's Day.

Loops and Beats.

We've got two major loop/beat packages this month.

For Hip Hop/Rap producers we've got Essential Urban Beats Volume One. A collection of big rattling beats from Hip Hop's 'golden age'. Eight beat groups with eight beats within each, so you can build up your songs, add drop sections, etc.

Hit songs lurk within, and they are all totally royalty free so you can use them wherever you like.

Next month we've got the Essential Urban Drum Hits Volume One which features over 200 individual drum hits, some of which we used when putting together the beats collection.

A sample/lite version of Essential Urban Beats Vol 1 with 16 samples will be available as freeware for anyone to download.

For electronic music producers, we've also got ANIMAtronic Volume One. This is a collection of electronic synthesizer loop samples developed using Steinberg's amazing ANIMA synth.

Very European in flavour, these loops have been sampled and processed in many different ways to produce a distinctive and heavy/industrial sound. The complete set is available here, not just a 'taster' so these loops can form the basis of complete songs/pieces.

A sample/lite version of ANIMAtronic Volume One with 16 samples will be available as freeware for any one to downlaod.

STM/Thomann SP404MKII Offer:

Finally, to celebrate the launch of Roland's SP404MKII sampler we've got a great offer. Purchase/order your SP404MKII from Thomann and we'll send you four great specially deveoped sample packs with over 1000 drum samples, loops and beats to spark your creativity.

TECHNIQUE: The Art of Sampling. Part Two. Basic Sampling Mechanics and Editing.

So I guess, like anything else, before we can begin to 'have fun' with, and start looking at some more creative aspects of sampling, we need some basics. We need to understand the principles and basic mechanics of sampling.

For the purposes of this piece we're really dealing with 'musical instrument' type sampling. Whilst 'sampling' and 'digital recording' are essentially the same process, 'sampling', for our purposes, means the recording of short sections of audio to be mapped across a keyboard and played at different pitches, usually +/- a semitone.

'Musical Instrument' type sampling has it's own set of concepts, ideas, and processes which we will take a look at here.

A dedicated hardware sampler would record samples from an external source, whilst a computer based sampler with an audio interface can record samples from external sources, or other sound generating devices within the computer.

For the purposes of this piece, and the accompanying video, I'll use the sampling facilities from Reason, but the editing processes are the same for all sampling systems.

Here's a quick video that also goes through some of the following concepts and procedures.

So first we have to capture our section of audio, or 'sample'. This usually involves 'hitting' a record or 'arm' button. We then play our note from the sample source. It doesn't really matter if we are not recording sound the moment hit 'record' as we can trim our sample later. So we hit the record button and record our sample, then hit stop. Most modern computer or hardware samplers give us  visual representation of our sample.

'Musical Instrument' type sampling usually involves taking multiple samples and 'mapping' them across different sections of the keyboard (this is called multi-sampling, and we'll take a closer look at this in Part 3) but here we'll just deal with a single sample.

So now we have our basic sample there are a number of sampling editing functions we can carry out. We'll use some images from Reason's sample editing window, but you'll find the processes very similar for other progarms/platforms.

So I've played a C3 using a choir sample and recorded it into Reason's sampling 'engine'.

When I open the editing window, I can see this.

So there are a number of editing facilities that we can use to make this choir sample more usable.

First of all, we can normalise the level. The sample isn't quite at optimum level, so we can run the normalising routine which will maximise the audio level of the sound without it distorting.

Normalising: (sometimes referred to as 'normalling'). This is a powerful computer routine that maximises the audio content of a sample whilst minimising noise or 'hiss' If your sample isn't initially recorded at the optimum level (and it can be quite difficult to achieve this) the normalising routine will maximise the audio level without distortion.

So we get a 'healthier' looking waveform.

There's a gap at the beginning of the sample and some silence at the end, so we can 'trim' the front of the sample so it starts at the right time and remove the silence at the end so we're not wasting memory.

Trimming: (sometime referred to as 'truncating', or 'cropping'). Allows us to 'trim' a sample between two points so that the sample starts and ends at the desired points.

So we get this:

Reversing: We can instantly reverse a sample and play it backwards if we like.

Finally we'll take a look at looping which is a very important part of 'musical instrument' type sampling.

Looping: Some instruments have a natural decay. If you play a note on a piano, the strings will gradually vibrate more quietly and the sound will fade away. Other instruments, such as an organ, can sound as long as they are played. A violinist can draw his or her bow across the strings backward and forwards to create constant sound. So some sampled instruments will require looping so they can sound indefinitely. In sampling's earlier days most instruments needed to be looped due to memory limitations. Even if an instrument had a natural decay, there often wasn't enough memory to allow such a long decay, so some form of looping had to be employed.

Speaking of the 'earlier days' of sampling, anyone who remembers using more basic sampling hardware will remember how notoriously difficult it was to find suitable loops points. There was nearly always a 'click' as the sample looped around. These days, we have a number of things that can help us such as 'crossfade' looping and forward/backwards looping which can help remove the dreaded 'click', and some instruments have routines to find suitable looping points.

So here you can see the two green 'loop' markers that the sample cycles around. In this mode the sample plays to the 'R' marker and then starts again at the 'L' marker. The 'loop mode' selection at the top also offers a forwards/backwards loop mode where the sample plays to the 'R' marker then reverses back to the 'L' marker.

So there are some basic recording and essential sample editing functions for a single sample.

In the next part, we'll take a look at mapping several samples across the keyboard (multi-sampling) and why, and in what circumstances we may need to do that.

TECHNIQUE: The Art of Sampling. Part One. Introduction.

Sampling Explained.

As a soundware designer and developer, I've spent a lot of my life sampling. Sampling instruments, synthesizers, drums and creating loops and beats.

I spent the mid to late eighties developing sampling libraries for hardware samplers of the age including EMU's Emax, Ensoniq's EPS and EPS16+, Roland's S Series and W30 workstation as well as Akai's S Series, and MPC series products.

It was back in the age when specialist suppliers understood that an extensive, ready made library of sampled sounds could make or break and instrument and a few 'hit' sounds could significantly bolster sales of a certain instrument.

In the depths of London's Denmark Street we would develop sounds with limited memory, limited sampling rates and almost impossible looping facilities. 'Time stretching' was as implausible as time travel.

But we persevered, cross sampling from other samplers, synths, drum machines as well as developing our own original creations.

'Sounds Sell Synths (and Samplers)' was the mantra and the library creations were often accompanied by visits to sound-hungry musicians, producers and 'superstars' in and around London where we would sell our library creations to feed their expensive hardware sampler purchases via a collection of 3.5" 'floppy' disks.

At this time, sampling was becoming more affordable. The days when only the eighties megastars and mega rich could afford a Fairlight CMI or a Synclavier were over with. The ability to record a sonic snapshot and 'map' it across a piano style keyboard at semitone intervals was considered an amazing artistic boon at the time and thanks to some of the instruments mentioned above it was becoming available to musicians and artists with more modest budgets.

Sampling has since become much more accessible through enormous advances in the size and cost of memory chips and the power of LSIs within computers. For a few hundred pounds you can now buy the necessary computer hardware and audio interface alongside the necessary software that would give you features, polyphony, and recording time that even the millionaire music megastars of the eighties could only dream of.

If you consider that Reason Intro ships for about £60 and includes the ultra-powerful NN-XT sampling instrument alongside powerful sample editing, you get some idea of the sampling power you can purchase for so little outlay.

Perhaps because sampling has become so much more affordable and accessible, it possible that it's taken a little for granted and maybe that's the trigger for this series of posts. Much of the sampling production techniques you might hear is now 'beat' or 'loop' style sampling which is not really what we're dealing with here.

So although there is much material regarding sampling both on the internet and in books and magazines, maybe it is time to take another look at the 'Art of Sampling' both in terms of the basic concepts and mechanics but also look at some more creative ideas processes that artists can employ to help make their tracks stand out from the crowd.

Here's the basic parts breakdown:

Part One: Intro.
Part Two: Basic Sampling Mechanics. Arming, recording, normalising, and looping.
Part Three: Keyboard Mapping. Why C3 isn't just C2 and octave higher.
Part Four: Velocity Mapping. An instrument played harder isn't just louder
Part Five: Sampling Synth Style Parameters and Effects. Filters, envelopes, modulators.
Part Six: Creative Sampling Techniques.
Part Seven: Sampling History and Landmark Instruments.

So in part two we'll take a look at the basics of sampling and basic sample editing.

Hope you find this post useful and informative. Why not follow me at my Facebook Page for all the latest updates on technical posts, product news, and free soundware.
